Your artist bio is one of the most important pieces of marketing copy you'll ever write. Here's a step-by-step framework for writing one that makes people actually want to press play.

Most artist bios are terrible. That's not an insult — it's a diagnosis. Most artist bios are either a list of accomplishments that sounds like a resume, or a vague string of adjectives that could describe literally anyone. Neither makes someone want to listen to your music.

A great bio does one thing: it makes the reader curious. It makes them feel like they'd be missing out if they didn't press play.

The framework has three parts. Start with the hook — one or two sentences that are specific and interesting, not "I've been making music since I was young." Try something like: "Raised between two countries and two languages, [Name] makes R&B that sounds like homesickness feels — warm, aching, and completely familiar." That's a hook. It tells us something true, something specific, and something that makes us want more.

Then write the story — two or three sentences about what shaped you as an artist. A specific place, experience, relationship, turning point. Don't summarize your whole life. Pick one thread and pull it. The most memorable bios are specific, not comprehensive.

Finish with the music — one or two sentences that describe your sound in a way that evokes feeling, not just genre. "Guitar-driven alternative rock" tells us nothing. "The sound of driving through your hometown at 2am, half nostalgic and half relieved you got out" tells us everything.

Common mistakes to avoid: don't use the word "unique" or "genre-bending" — everyone says this and no one believes it. Don't list influences unless they're unexpected, because "influenced by Kendrick Lamar" means nothing in 2026. Don't write in first person — third person reads as more professional in press materials. And don't make it too long — if it's more than 150 words, cut it.
